Grey to Black Color Extraction from Sumac Leaves
Sumac leaves contain tannins and flavonoids, which react with iron salts to produce grey to black tones.
The depth of color depends on the mordant used in the extraction process.
Extraction Methods
- Pick mature sumac leaves in late summer or early fall.
- Dry completely in the shade.
- Add dried leaves to a pot of distilled water.
- Simmer at 85-90°C for 1 hour.
- Strain out solids and cool the liquid.
- Add iron sulfate (FeSO₄) to the extract.
- Let it react for 1-2 hours to develop dark grey to black hues.
- Soak dried sumac leaves in an alkaline solution (pH 9-10).
- Extract for 24-48 hours at room temperature.
- Filter and evaporate excess liquid for a stronger pigment.
- Add iron salts for black coloration.
Uses of Sumac Leaf Extract
- Natural textile dye – Cotton, wool, silk (with iron mordant).
- Black ink production – For traditional calligraphy & painting.
