Cardamom Oil Distillation Plant

Cardamom Oil Distillation Plant
Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) is the world's third most expensive spice by weight, and its essential oil commands a premium in global markets. Cardamom oil is rich in 1,8-cineole (20–40%) and α-terpinyl acetate (25–45%), giving it a distinctly fresh, sweet, and slightly camphorous character prized by the food, beverage, fragrance, and dental industries. India is one of the world's largest cardamom producers (Kerala and Karnataka), making locally manufactured distillation equipment a critical investment for value-added processing. Mechotech manufactures cardamom oil distillation plants optimised for maximum aromatic yield from decorticated seeds with full GMP compliance.
Mechotech's cardamom oil distillation plants are configured for steam distillation of Elettaria cardamomum decorticated seeds (seeds removed from pods), yielding 3–8% essential oil. The plant features a SS 316L still pot with perforated false bottom, precisely controlled steam at 0.5–1.2 bar, a high-efficiency shell-and-tube condenser, and a Florentine flask for gravity-based oil-water separation. Cardamom oil (specific gravity 0.917–0.947) separates cleanly from the hydrosol. The aromatic hydrosol (cardamom water) is a valuable co-product. Whole pods can also be distilled (yield 3–8% on pod weight) in the same plant with appropriate pre-crushing. Batch sizes range from 100 kg to 1,500 kg of decorticated seed per cycle.
Manufacturing Process
Raw Material Preparation
Cardamom pods are decorticated (husked) to separate the aromatic seeds from the outer pericarp. Seeds are cleaned to remove husk fragments and dried to moisture ≤ 12%. Before loading, seeds are lightly cracked or coarsely milled to open the seed coat and expose oil glands, improving oil recovery by 15–25%. Whole pods may alternatively be crushed and distilled where pod husks contribute additional aroma.
Loading the Still
Prepared cardamom seeds are charged into the SS 316L still pot and spread evenly over the perforated false bottom. Bed depth is typically 0.6–1.0 m. The still is sealed and, for steam distillation, connected to the steam supply. In hydro-distillation mode, demineralised water is added at a 3:1 water-to-material ratio before sealing, particularly suitable for small-batch or boilerless operations.
Steam Distillation
Live steam at 0.5–1.2 bar passes through the seed bed, volatilising 1,8-cineole, α-terpinyl acetate, linalool, linalool acetate, and minor terpene esters. Distillation is typically complete in 3–5 hours at still temperatures of 100–108 °C. The light 1,8-cineole fraction comes over first; heavier α-terpinyl acetate follows in the latter half of the distillation run.
Condensation
The vapour mixture of steam and cardamom oil enters the shell-and-tube condenser through an insulated dome and gooseneck. Cooling water circulates counter-currently on the shell side, condensing the vapour to liquid at 30–40 °C. The condenser is sized for the initial peak oil-flow period to prevent any vapour carryover past the condenser.
Oil-Water Separation
Condensate flows into the SS 316L Florentine flask. Cardamom oil (specific gravity 0.917–0.947) floats above the hydrosol and continuously overflows into the oil collection vessel. The aromatic hydrosol — rich in dissolved cineole and linalool — is a premium co-product used in premium beverages, culinary sprays, and cosmetics, commanding INR 500–1,500 per litre in specialty markets.
Quality Testing & Packing
Finished cardamom oil is tested for specific gravity (0.917–0.947), refractive index (1.460–1.466), 1,8-cineole content (20–40% by GC-MS), α-terpinyl acetate content (25–45%), optical rotation (−22° to −44°), and organoleptic profile. Conforming oil is filled into amber glass bottles or food-grade aluminium containers under nitrogen blanket, with ISO/GC-MS certificates attached to each batch.

Key Features
Maximum Aromatic Yield
Optimised steam pressure and bed depth parameters deliver 95–98% extraction efficiency from each batch of decorticated seeds, achieving 3–8% oil yield with a balanced 1,8-cineole and α-terpinyl acetate profile meeting food and fragrance grade specifications.
Dual-Fraction Collection
The distillation system allows sequential collection of early-run (cineole-rich) and late-run (terpinyl acetate-rich) fractions separately, enabling Mechotech plant operators to tailor oil composition for different market requirements — food grade versus fragrance grade.
SS 316L GMP Construction
All product-contact surfaces are SS 316L fabricated and electropolished on internal surfaces, meeting food-grade and pharma GMP standards. The plant layout follows GMP zoning with dedicated clean, process, and utility areas to support pharmaceutical-grade cardamom oil production.
Hydrosol Recovery System
A dedicated hydrosol collection and storage system recovers cardamom aromatic water as a premium co-product for the beverage and cosmetics industries, improving batch economics significantly.
Whole-Pod or Decorticated Seed Flexibility
The plant is configurable to process either decorticated seeds (for oil richness) or crushed whole pods (for a fuller aromatic profile including pod-husk volatiles), with adjustable false-bottom mesh size to handle both material types.
