Black Pepper Extraction Plant

Black pepper (Piper nigrum) oleoresin and piperine are high-value botanical extracts used extensively in food flavouring, pharmaceutical bioavailability enhancement, and nutraceutical formulations. Mechotech's extraction plants deliver piperine-standardized extracts and full-spectrum oleoresin from black pepper berries.

Mechotech designs black pepper extraction plants using solvent extraction to yield oleoresin (2%–4% of dried pepper) and pure piperine (95%+ purity) through multi-stage extraction, evaporation, and crystallization. Our GMP-compliant, explosion-proof plants are built for the pharmaceutical piperine market where BioPerine-grade purity is required, as well as for food-grade oleoresin manufacturers.

Manufacturing Process

1

Pepper Grinding

Dried black pepper berries are ground to 40 mesh in impact mills. Controlled particle size maximises piperine extraction efficiency.

2

Solvent Extraction

Ground pepper is extracted with food-grade ethanol or hexane in percolation extractors. Multiple solvent washes ensure complete piperine recovery from the pepper matrix.

3

Miscella Filtration

The piperine-rich miscella is filtered through multi-stage filtration to remove all solid fines and colour pigments.

4

Evaporation

The filtered extract is evaporated under vacuum in falling-film evaporators to yield crude black pepper oleoresin with residual solvent below 5 ppm.

5

Piperine Crystallization

For high-purity piperine production, the oleoresin is dissolved in hot ethanol, decolourized with activated carbon, and cooled to crystallize pure piperine at 95%+ purity.

6

Drying & Standardization

Crystallized piperine is filtered, washed, and vacuum-dried. Oleoresin is standardized to the specified piperine content before final packing.

Applications

  • Pharmaceutical bioavailability enhancer (BioPerine)
  • Food-grade spice oleoresin for flavouring
  • Nutraceutical absorption-enhancement supplements
  • Weight management supplement formulations
  • Traditional medicine and Ayurvedic preparations
  • Cosmetic skin penetration enhancer
  • Agricultural biopesticide active ingredient
  • Research-grade piperine standard

Key Features

  • Pharmaceutical-Grade Piperine

Dedicated crystallization train produces 95%+ pure piperine suitable for pharmaceutical bioavailability enhancement, meeting USP and EP monograph specifications.

  • Dual-Mode Operation

Plant can switch between oleoresin production mode and pure piperine crystallization mode to serve both food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade markets.

  • Explosion-Proof Design

Full ATEX-certified electrical fittings, earthing systems, and flame arrestors ensure safe operation with flammable solvents throughout all extraction zones.

  • Low Residual Solvent

Advanced vacuum stripping ensures residual solvent in final oleoresin is below ICH Q3C limits for pharmaceutical-grade product compliance.

  • High Recovery

Optimized percolation extraction sequence achieves over 90% piperine recovery from raw material, maximizing product yield per tonne of pepper processed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What piperine purity can Mechotech's plant achieve?
With the crystallization option, our plants consistently deliver piperine at 95%+ purity suitable for pharmaceutical and premium nutraceutical applications. Oleoresin is standardized to 35%–55% piperine content.
Can the plant process both black and white pepper?
Yes. Both black pepper (Piper nigrum) and long pepper (Piper longum) can be processed in the same plant with minor parameter adjustments. White pepper gives different flavour profile oleoresin.
What is the approximate oleoresin yield from black pepper?
Dried black pepper typically yields 2%–4% oleoresin by solvent extraction. Piperine content in the oleoresin is typically 35%–55% by HPLC depending on pepper variety and origin.
Is Mechotech's plant suitable for BioPerine trademark production?
Our plant design meets the technical requirements for producing pharmaceutical-grade piperine. Trademark or brand-name registrations are the manufacturer's responsibility, but our product quality specifications match or exceed BioPerine grade requirements.
