Coriander Extraction Plant

Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) seed oleoresin is a valued flavouring ingredient containing linalool (60%–70%) and fixed fatty acids. Mechotech's coriander extraction plants deliver consistent, food-grade oleoresin and optionally linalool-standardized essential oil fractions for the food, fragrance, and pharmaceutical markets.

Mechotech designs coriander seed extraction plants using food-grade solvent extraction to produce oleoresin with authentic coriander flavour profile. The plant features vacuum evaporation for low-temperature solvent recovery, multi-stage filtration, and GC standardization to ensure each batch meets the customer's volatile oil specification. Optional combination with steam distillation gives integrated oleoresin + essential oil production.

Manufacturing Process

1

Seed Grinding

Coriander seeds are cleaned, inspected, and ground to 20–40 mesh. Pre-extraction volatile oil content is measured to predict oleoresin yield.

2

Solvent Extraction

Ground seeds are extracted with food-grade ethanol or acetone in percolation vessels with multiple solvent passes to maximize linalool and oleoresin recovery.

3

Filtration

The coriander miscella is filtered through multi-stage filtration including sparkler and polishing filters to remove all particulate and colour bodies.

4

Evaporation

Filtered miscella is concentrated in a falling-film evaporator under vacuum at 50–60°C, producing a pale yellow to pale orange viscous oleoresin.

5

Standardization

Oleoresin is tested for volatile oil content, linalool percentage, and fixed oil content. Batches are adjusted to meet customer specification before packing.

6

Filling & Packing

Standardized oleoresin is filled into lacquer-lined food-grade tins or bulk drums under nitrogen blanket to preserve the delicate linalool aroma during storage.

Applications

  • Food flavouring (sausage, pickle, curry powder)
  • Beverage and distilled spirit flavouring
  • Pharmaceutical digestive and carminative formulations
  • Fragrance compounding (citrus-floral notes)
  • Bakery and confectionery flavour applications
  • Ayurvedic digestive preparations
  • Cosmetic and soap fragrance
  • Tobacco flavouring applications

Key Features

  • Linalool Preservation

Low-temperature vacuum evaporation below 60°C prevents linalool evaporation and thermal transformation, preserving the characteristic delicate coriander aroma.

  • High Volatile Oil Recovery

Optimized extraction sequence achieves 90%+ volatile oil recovery from the seed matrix, maximizing the value of raw material per batch.

  • Dual-Mode Processing

Optional steam distillation pre-step removes essential oil fraction before solvent extraction of the fixed-oil rich oleoresin from the same seed batch.

  • Food-Grade Compliance

Complete food safety compliance with FSSAI, FDA 21 CFR Part 182, and EU Regulation 1334/2008 for spice oleoresin in food manufacturing.

  • Multi-Spice Platform

The same plant processes cumin, fennel, caraway, coriander, and other umbelliferous spices with parameter adjustments, maximizing equipment utilization.

Frequently Asked Questions

What volatile oil content does coriander oleoresin contain?
Quality coriander oleoresin contains 30%–40% volatile oil (dominated by linalool at 60%–70% of the volatile fraction) plus fixed fatty oils and non-volatile flavour compounds. Mechotech's plant is optimized to preserve maximum volatile oil.
Can the plant process both coriander seeds and leaves?
Seed and leaf extraction require different approaches. Seed oleoresin is produced by solvent extraction. Leaf (cilantro) processing is typically done by hydrodistillation to capture the volatile aldehydes. Mechotech designs integrated plants handling both.
What is the typical yield of oleoresin from coriander seeds?
Coriander seeds typically yield 5%–8% oleoresin by solvent extraction. The volatile oil content in quality seeds is 0.4%–1.2%, which becomes concentrated in the oleoresin.
Can the plant be used for organic coriander oleoresin production?
Yes. With certified organic solvent (food-grade organic ethanol) and GMP-compliant cleaning procedures, our plant supports organic-certified production for NOP and EU Organic markets.
