Cardamom Extraction Plant

Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) oleoresin and essential oil are premium flavouring and therapeutic ingredients rich in 1,8-cineole, terpinyl acetate, and linalool. Mechotech builds dedicated cardamom extraction plants for food flavour manufacturers, fragrance houses, and pharmaceutical companies seeking consistent, high-quality cardamom derivatives.

Mechotech's cardamom extraction plant employs solvent extraction of decorticated cardamom seeds to yield oleoresin standardized to 60%–75% volatile oil content by GC. The plant integrates solvent recovery, vacuum evaporation, and multi-stage filtration to deliver food-grade oleoresin with authentic cardamom flavour profile and no residual solvent issues.

Manufacturing Process

1

Seed Separation

Cardamom pods are decorticiated using a dehusking machine to isolate seeds. Seeds are dried to below 10% moisture and ground to 20–40 mesh.

2

Solvent Extraction

Ground seeds are extracted with food-grade acetone or ethanol in percolation extractors. Multiple extraction cycles ensure complete oleoresin recovery from the seed matrix.

3

Filtration

The seed extract (miscella) is filtered through sparkler and polishing filters to remove all suspended matter before evaporation.

4

Solvent Evaporation

The filtered miscella is evaporated under vacuum at 50–60°C in a falling-film evaporator to yield a concentrated, pale-yellow viscous oleoresin.

5

Standardization

Oleoresin is tested by GC for volatile oil content (targeting 60%–75%) and terpinyl acetate content. Batches are blended to ensure specification compliance.

6

Packing

The standardized oleoresin is packed in lacquer-lined food-grade tins or aluminium containers under nitrogen flush to prevent oxidative degradation during storage.

Applications

  • Food flavouring (confectionery, bakery, beverages)
  • Beverage flavouring (tea, coffee, chai masala)
  • Pharmaceutical digestive aid formulations
  • Oral care and breath freshening products
  • Fragrance and perfumery (oriental notes)
  • Ayurvedic tonic and cardioprotective preparations
  • Tobacco and betel nut flavouring
  • Cosmetic and personal care applications

Key Features

  • Full Flavour Profile

Solvent extraction captures both volatile and non-volatile cardamom flavour compounds, delivering a more complete and authentic flavour versus essential oil alone.

  • High Volatile Oil Content

Optimized extraction and low-temperature evaporation preserves volatile compounds, consistently delivering 60%–75% volatile oil in the oleoresin.

  • Acetone & Ethanol Compatibility

Plant design supports both acetone (higher yield) and ethanol (food-grade preferred) solvent extraction with quick changeover between solvents.

  • Solvent Recovery System

Integrated condensation and recovery unit recycles over 95% of extraction solvent, significantly reducing per-unit processing costs.

  • Nitrogen Packaging

Integrated nitrogen blanketing and flush system during filling extends oleoresin shelf life and prevents off-flavour development from oxidation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What volatile oil content can be expected in the oleoresin?
Mechotech's cardamom extraction plant delivers oleoresin with 60%–75% volatile oil content from premium quality Guatemalan or Indian cardamom. Volatile oil quality (dominated by terpinyl acetate and 1,8-cineole) is verified by GC-MS analysis.
Can the plant process cardamom seeds, powder, and spent material?
Yes. Primary extraction from freshly decorticated seeds gives the highest yield. The plant can also process commercially available ground cardamom or spent seeds from previous steam distillation runs.
What is the typical oleoresin yield from cardamom?
Decorticated cardamom seeds yield 5%–10% oleoresin by solvent extraction from premium quality material. Lower grades may yield 3%–5%.
Can cardamom oleoresin be used directly in clear beverage applications?
Cardamom oleoresin requires emulsification using food-grade emulsifiers (e.g., quillaia extract or modified starch) for use in clear beverages. Mechotech can advise on downstream formulation requirements.
