Manufacturing Process

Raw Material Preparation

Dried coriander seeds (moisture ≤ 10%) are cleaned using a vibratory screen and aspirator to remove weed seeds, stalks, and dust. Seeds are lightly cracked or crushed in a roller mill or corrugated disc mill to rupture the oil-bearing carpels. Crushing improves oil yield significantly (by 20–30%) because intact coriander seeds have a hard outer coat that restricts steam penetration to the oil-bearing structures inside.

Loading the Still

Cracked coriander seeds are charged into the SS 316L still pot and spread evenly over the perforated false bottom. Given the relatively low oil yield (0.8–1.8%), batch sizes need to be large to produce commercially viable oil volumes per cycle; Mechotech sizes the still pot accordingly. The vessel is sealed and, for steam distillation, connected to the steam supply at controlled pressure.

Steam Distillation

Live steam at 0.5–1.5 bar passes through the seed bed, volatilising linalool, camphor, geraniol, and other constituents. Distillation duration is 2–4 hours at still temperatures of 100–108 °C. Linalool, being a mid-boiling alcohol, co-distils with monoterpenes in the initial hours. The oil recovery rate decreases toward the end of the run; distillation is terminated when the rate drops below 0.05% per 30 minutes.

Condensation

The vapour mixture of steam and coriander oil passes through an insulated dome and gooseneck into the shell-and-tube condenser. The condenser is sized for the initial peak vapour load. Cooling water circulates counter-currently on the shell side, condensing the vapour at 28–38 °C. Insulation on the gooseneck prevents heat loss that could cause partial condensation before the condenser entry.

Oil-Water Separation

Condensate flows into the SS 316L Florentine flask where coriander oil (specific gravity 0.862–0.878) floats cleanly above the hydrosol and overflows continuously into the oil collection vessel. Coriander hydrosol — aromatic water with a characteristic fresh linalool fragrance — is collected separately as a saleable co-product for use in food flavouring, cosmetics, and aromatherapy applications.

Quality Testing & Packing

Coriander seed oil is tested for specific gravity (0.862–0.878 at 25 °C), refractive index (1.462–1.472), linalool content (≥60% by GC-MS), optical rotation (+5° to +10°, reflecting predominantly (+)-linalool), camphor content (<10%), and organoleptic profile. Conforming oil is filled into amber glass bottles or food-grade aluminium containers under nitrogen blanket, with GC-MS batch certificates.
