Coriander Seed Oil Distillation Plant

Coriander Seed Oil Distillation Plant
Coriander seed (Coriandrum sativum) essential oil is one of India's most commercially significant spice oils, characterised by its dominant linalool content (60–80%) — a sweet, floral, slightly spicy alcohol that is among the most widely used aroma chemicals in the world. India is the largest global producer of coriander seed, giving Indian distillers a natural raw material advantage. Coriander seed oil is prized in the fragrance industry (soaps, cosmetics, fine perfumery), food flavouring (gin botanicals, liqueurs, seasonings), and increasingly in aromatherapy. Mechotech manufactures coriander seed oil distillation plants optimised for maximum linalool recovery with consistent batch-to-batch quality.
Mechotech's coriander seed oil distillation plants are configured for steam distillation of Coriandrum sativum seeds, delivering oil yields of 0.8–1.8% from dried seeds. The oil is dominated by linalool (60–80%), with secondary constituents including camphor (3–8%), geraniol (1–5%), and α-terpineol. The plant features a SS 316L jacketed still pot with perforated false bottom, controlled steam injection at 0.5–1.5 bar, a shell-and-tube condenser, and a Florentine flask for gravity separation. Coriander oil (specific gravity 0.862–0.878) floats cleanly on hydrosol. The aromatic hydrosol is a valued co-product for the food and cosmetic industries. Batch capacities range from 300 kg to 3,000 kg of dry seed per cycle, sized for the relatively low oil yield typical of this botanical.
Manufacturing Process
Raw Material Preparation
Dried coriander seeds (moisture ≤ 10%) are cleaned using a vibratory screen and aspirator to remove weed seeds, stalks, and dust. Seeds are lightly cracked or crushed in a roller mill or corrugated disc mill to rupture the oil-bearing carpels. Crushing improves oil yield significantly (by 20–30%) because intact coriander seeds have a hard outer coat that restricts steam penetration to the oil-bearing structures inside.
Loading the Still
Cracked coriander seeds are charged into the SS 316L still pot and spread evenly over the perforated false bottom. Given the relatively low oil yield (0.8–1.8%), batch sizes need to be large to produce commercially viable oil volumes per cycle; Mechotech sizes the still pot accordingly. The vessel is sealed and, for steam distillation, connected to the steam supply at controlled pressure.
Steam Distillation
Live steam at 0.5–1.5 bar passes through the seed bed, volatilising linalool, camphor, geraniol, and other constituents. Distillation duration is 2–4 hours at still temperatures of 100–108 °C. Linalool, being a mid-boiling alcohol, co-distils with monoterpenes in the initial hours. The oil recovery rate decreases toward the end of the run; distillation is terminated when the rate drops below 0.05% per 30 minutes.
Condensation
The vapour mixture of steam and coriander oil passes through an insulated dome and gooseneck into the shell-and-tube condenser. The condenser is sized for the initial peak vapour load. Cooling water circulates counter-currently on the shell side, condensing the vapour at 28–38 °C. Insulation on the gooseneck prevents heat loss that could cause partial condensation before the condenser entry.
Oil-Water Separation
Condensate flows into the SS 316L Florentine flask where coriander oil (specific gravity 0.862–0.878) floats cleanly above the hydrosol and overflows continuously into the oil collection vessel. Coriander hydrosol — aromatic water with a characteristic fresh linalool fragrance — is collected separately as a saleable co-product for use in food flavouring, cosmetics, and aromatherapy applications.
Quality Testing & Packing
Coriander seed oil is tested for specific gravity (0.862–0.878 at 25 °C), refractive index (1.462–1.472), linalool content (≥60% by GC-MS), optical rotation (+5° to +10°, reflecting predominantly (+)-linalool), camphor content (<10%), and organoleptic profile. Conforming oil is filled into amber glass bottles or food-grade aluminium containers under nitrogen blanket, with GC-MS batch certificates.
Applications
- Fragrance industry — floral, woody linalool note in soaps, shampoos, cosmetics, and fine perfumery
- Food flavouring — gin botanicals, liqueurs, seasoning blends, and meat products
- Aromatherapy — calming, stress-relief diffusion blends and massage oil formulations
- Beverage industry — flavouring for herbal teas, health drinks, and craft spirits
- Pharmaceutical — flavouring and aromatic component in oral pharmaceutical preparations
- Natural cosmetics — active ingredient in natural skin care and hair care products
- Hydrosol recovery — coriander water for skin toners, culinary sprays, and food applications
Key Features
High Linalool Recovery
Optimised steam flow and pre-crushing of seeds ensures 90–95% extraction of the available linalool per batch, consistently producing oil with 60–80% linalool content that meets fragrance and food industry specifications from European and US buyers.
Pre-Crushing Integration
Mechotech can supply an integrated roller mill or corrugated disc crusher as part of the plant package to crack coriander seeds before distillation, improving oil yield by 20–30% compared to whole-seed distillation and reducing total distillation time per batch.
SS 316L GMP Construction
All product-contact surfaces are SS 316L fabricated, meeting food-grade and pharmaceutical GMP construction standards required for linalool-grade coriander oil destined for fragrance or pharmaceutical applications.
Large-Batch Capability
Because coriander seed oil yield (0.8–1.8%) is lower than many other spice oils, Mechotech sizes the still pot for large batches (up to 3,000 kg seed per cycle) to produce commercially viable oil volumes per distillation run and reduce per-kilogram production cost.
Hydrosol Co-Product Recovery
Coriander hydrosol is a valued fragrant water with multiple applications in food and cosmetics. Mechotech's plant includes a dedicated hydrosol collection and storage system to capture this co-product revenue stream with every batch.
